Omotola: Foreigners Can Be Wack Too

Written by Grumpy Old Man

I was so scandalized when I saw Omotola’s video for her new single, Feel Alright that I lost my ability to talk for a while. Anyway going through my video collection, I saw it again and decided to post it up just for the record…

The video is so bad with it’s stock Windows Movie Maker effects, I was confused how the same Nigerian music industry that’s been bringing us solid videos could still come up with material as wretched as this. Well it seems that Omotola, in her quest to outshine everyone else, to do it better decided to look outside naija’s shores for a producer and director and the end result was this:

The person who claims to have directed the video and uploaded it to Vimeo is a cat called Ron Hightower. Now, Ron Hightower appears to be a retired pron star, turned music video director… huh? yeah you read right. He is responsible for this 2 Live Crew video also:

And this video by some broad called India… I’m so sure he’s hitting that… Also note the 2 Live Crew cameo:

So the questions are why even go outside naija for a video director? There’s enough world class talent in naija right now and I can bet they’re still way cheaper than any foreigner. This is a classic example of the Nigerian belief that foreigners are better or can do X better than Nigerians. She never hear of Clarence Peter of Capital Hill (who also did Ill Bliss’s Aiye Po Gan? Or P-Square’s brother, the one who directs all their videos? How about the fellow who did Faze’s Originality?

Did she sanction the video? Did she pay him? Didn’t she check his resume first? Considering how “Christian” Nigerian “Christians” get would she have knowingly paid this guy to do a video for her?

Ron Hightower @Wikipedia , @IMDB @MySpace and of course you can see the rest of his videos here, including this classic “A New You Pole Aerobics” trailer:
